Great post! The idea is one that I have implemented on a number of sites. It required buy in from everyone on the team to be truly successful.

With Drupal 7, you can now define other modes beyond full node, teaser display. With that in mind, you could essentially model any variation needed, as in sidebar or block mode?

The default wrappers and formatting for fields is often way more than needed, enter Semantic CCK. With this module you can define at the field level exactly the CSS/XHTML you want. With this combo, using the display field settings, and the Field permissions module you could setup a very dynamic display that is consistent across the entire site with zero code.

I am a fan of tpl files as they are so easily versionable, with the proper caching setup any node load issues are mitigated with ease. Semantic CCK does work with Features, so as an alternative to tpl files, creating a nicely setup Feature with your styling can now cross the theme barrier that tpl file present.

That kind of setup is really where it is at, a layout of node content by mode, implemented via Features and not abused by template files or crazy complicated views with field output overrides.

Cheers!

Couldn't agree more. The urge to program is uncontrollable for some of us. While coding skills can obviously make or break a project, the ability to read and keep informed about the Drupal ecosystem is equally important. Why waste a lot of time and money re-inventing something? Experimentation and improving code sometimes make it necessary to leap forward, but not in a production environment if it can be avoided.

Er, OK, I'm not exactly sure what you mean - there is an issue because of an outdated conception of taxonomy, and I've solved it by using tools that repackage that conception in a more modern way. Short of ditching taxonomy altogether (which loses the power of filtering and various other things) I'm not exactly sure what you'd propose.

I've been running three separate cPanel VPS gigs for the past several years and thought that I was getting good performance. I spent hours upon hours tweaking my code and the server to minimize page load times. But I recently switched to a bare-bones server running Nginx and with the exact same code I'm getting 10x (10 times) the performance. And pages snap into place without even a hesitation. It's amazing!
